Wed Oct 16 04:05:41 UTC 2024: ## China Surrounds Taiwan in Massive Military Drills, Citing “Separatist Acts”
**TAIPEI, TAIWAN** – In a display of military might, the Chinese military and coast guard conducted large-scale drills surrounding Taiwan’s main island on Monday, prompting alarm in the region. Beijing claimed the exercises were a warning against “separatist acts,” citing a recent speech by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te.
The drills, which commenced without prior notice, involved all branches of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), including a strike group led by the Liaoning, one of China’s two active aircraft carriers. The PLA’s Eastern Command spokesperson, Li Xi, stated the exercises focused on sea and air combat readiness, simulating blockades of key Taiwanese ports and areas, and assaults on maritime and ground targets.
Simultaneously, the Chinese coast guard, while separate from the military, announced “law enforcement patrols” around the main island, which they termed “a practical action to control Taiwan Island.” Tracking data revealed at least 16 Chinese coast guard vessels in the Taiwan Strait, effectively encircling the island.
Taiwan authorities reported detecting 34 naval vessels and 125 aircraft in formation around the island.
These drills follow a pattern of escalating military activity around Taiwan by China, often coinciding with events perceived as challenging Beijing’s claims over the self-governed island.
The recent drills are dubbed “Joint Sword 2024-B” and were anticipated since similar exercises, codenamed “Joint Sword 2024-A,” were held in May.
The Liaoning aircraft carrier, while representing a significant step in China’s naval power projection, faces limitations compared to carriers from other nations, including a less efficient power plant and underpowered aircraft-launching system.
The current exercises have raised concerns about the potential for escalation in the Taiwan Strait, highlighting the ongoing tension between China and Taiwan.
