Wed Oct 16 10:47:04 UTC 2024: ## Israel’s Airstrikes on Beirut Spark U.S. Concerns and Intensify Conflict

**Beirut, Lebanon** – Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs have escalated tensions with Hezbollah, prompting concerns from the United States over the scope of the attacks.

Early Wednesday morning, two explosions rocked the area, sending plumes of smoke into the air. While the Israeli military claims the strikes targeted a Hezbollah weapons stockpile in Dahieh, witnesses report the attacks impacted a broader area, affecting over a quarter of Lebanon through evacuation orders.

The U.S. State Department expressed concern over the scale of the bombing campaign, stating that they have made their concerns clear to the Israeli government. This marks a stronger stance from Washington than previously seen. Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati also revealed discussions with U.S. officials resulted in a “guarantee” for reduced strikes on Beirut and its suburbs.

These strikes come on the heels of a deadly October 10 attack that killed 22 people and caused significant destruction in a densely populated neighborhood. The attack was reportedly aimed at Hezbollah official Wafiq Safa, who survived. Israeli forces have also intensified their efforts against Hezbollah leadership, aiming to weaken the organization.

Despite growing international calls for a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains opposed, emphasizing the importance of Israel’s military campaign.

Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Naim Qassem, has also called for a ceasefire, but warned of continued “pain” for Israel.

The humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to rise, with Lebanese health authorities reporting over 2,350 deaths and 11,000 wounded due to Israeli strikes over the past year. Over 1.2 million people, including many women and children, have been displaced.

The conflict remains a serious threat to regional stability and raises concerns about the potential for further escalation. The international community is urging both sides to de-escalate the situation and engage in dialogue to find a peaceful solution.
