Wed Oct 16 11:44:34 UTC 2024: ## Gambhir Declares “Bowling Era” in Indian Cricket, Backs Bumrah as Vice-Captain
**New Delhi:** India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has declared a “bowling era” in Indian cricket, emphasizing the importance of bowlers in winning matches. His statement comes ahead of India’s upcoming test series against New Zealand, starting on October 16th.
Speaking at a press conference, Gambhir stated that while batsmen lay the foundation for victory, bowlers are the ultimate game-changers. He argued that even if the batting unit scores 1,000 runs, there’s no guarantee of victory, whereas taking 20 wickets in a match gives a team a 99% chance of winning.
He attributed this “bowling era” to the rise of Indian fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, who he believes are changing the global cricket landscape. Gambhir highlighted Bumrah’s cunning and ability to turn the tide of any match, calling him the “best fast bowler in the world.”
This unwavering faith in Bumrah is reflected in his appointment as vice-captain for the New Zealand test series. Bumrah, currently joint-top wicket-taker in test matches this year with 38 wickets alongside England’s Gus Atkinson and Sri Lanka’s Prabhat Jayasuriya, is seen as a crucial asset for India’s bowling attack.
Gambhir also acknowledged the shift in mindset towards bowling in India, crediting the likes of Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja for spearheading this change. He emphasized the importance of a strong bowling unit in modern cricket, suggesting a new era where bowlers reign supreme.
