Wed Oct 16 08:16:36 UTC 2024: ## Panda Diplomacy Returns to Washington DC: Two New Pandas Arrive at National Zoo

**Washington, DC** – The National Zoo is welcoming two new giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, back to its panda habitat in a symbolic gesture of renewed US-China relations. The pandas, a male and female, arrived in Washington on Tuesday after a three-year journey from China. Their arrival marks a significant step in the ongoing “panda diplomacy” between the two nations.

This latest installment in the long-running panda exchange program follows the return of the zoo’s previous pandas to China last year. The absence of a quick replacement fueled speculation about strained relations, but Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to send new “envoys of friendship.”

The arrival of the two new pandas, the first to arrive in the US in 21 years, has generated excitement among both locals and tourists. Destination DC president and CEO Elliott L Ferguson, II, emphasizes the significant impact these animals have on the city, attracting visitors and boosting local businesses.

The National Zoo has been preparing for the pandas’ arrival, renovating their habitat with new pools and bamboo stands. However, the pandas will not be available to the public for at least a month while they acclimate to their new surroundings.

China has been employing “panda diplomacy” since 1972, when a pair of pandas were gifted to Washington following President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China. This latest exchange is part of a 10-year agreement focused on panda conservation and research, specifically tackling diseases and protecting habitats.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu believes the arrival of the pandas will strengthen US-China relations. The global population of giant pandas has increased significantly, with a 17 percent jump in wild populations between 2004 and 2014, according to the World Wildlife Fund. This positive trend led Chinese conservationists to reclassify the animal from endangered to vulnerable in 2021.
