Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden and at least two former presidents, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, are expected to attend a memorial service for Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of the Kennedy family, at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle on Wednesday afternoon. President Biden is set to deliver a eulogy.
Ethel Kennedy, a social activist and wife of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, passed away last Thursday at the age of 96 following a stroke. She is survived by nine of her eleven children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
The service will also be attended by notable figures including Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., John Kerry, musician Sting, and actor Edward James Olmos.
A private funeral mass for the Kennedy family and invited guests was held in Centerville, Massachusetts, on Monday.
Ethel Kennedy met Robert Kennedy at the age of 17 and married him in 1950. Her life was forever changed by the assassination of her husband in 1968. She vowed never to remarry, a promise she kept.
Ethel Kennedy was a pillar of strength and resilience, receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2014. She was widely admired for her generosity, grace, and unwavering faith in the face of personal tragedy.
