Tue Oct 15 21:06:20 UTC 2024: ## African Cup of Nations Qualifiers: Salah Scores, Comoros Upset Tunisia, South Africa Pummels Congo

**Cairo, October 12, 2024:** The third round of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers saw a mix of expected victories and dramatic upsets. Egypt, led by prolific scorer Mohamed Salah, maintained their perfect record with a 2-0 win over Mauritania, while South Africa secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Congo. However, the biggest shock came as Comoros stunned Tunisia 1-0, ending the Carthage Eagles’ 16-match home winning streak in the qualifiers.

Salah’s goal in the 79th minute against Mauritania cemented Egypt’s top spot in Group C. Meanwhile, Cameroon’s Bryan Mbeumo and Vincent Aboubakar, along with Martin Hongla and Christian Bassogog, propelled their team to a 4-1 victory over Kenya, securing their place at the top of Group J.

South Africa, led by Teboho Mokoena’s brace and goals from Bathusi Aubaas, Lyle Foster, and Iqraam Rayners, showcased their dominance against Congo. Despite the impressive win, coach Hugo Broos warned his team not to underestimate their opponents in the return match.

Nigeria secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Libya, thanks to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s late goal. The victory, however, came with a cost, as the Super Eagles struggled to break down a stubborn Libyan defense, highlighting the absence of injured star striker Victor Osimhen.

Senegal continued their strong form, defeating Malawi 4-0 with goals from Sadio Mane and Nicolas Jackson. The match was marred by a red card for Malawi’s goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali, after just 16 minutes.

These victories solidify the positions of several teams in their respective groups, while upsets like Comoros’ victory over Tunisia keep the competition unpredictable and exciting. As the qualifiers progress, the battle for places in the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco intensifies.
