Wed Oct 16 02:02:32 UTC 2024: ## China Conducts Largest-Ever Air Operation Near Taiwan, Raising Tensions

**SYDNEY** – China has conducted its largest-ever air operation within Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), deploying 153 aircraft, 14 warships, and 12 Coast Guard vessels in a surprise exercise dubbed “Joint Sword 2024B”. The operation, which took place on October 14-15, was widely seen as a message to Taiwan’s government following President Lai Ching-te’s recent comments, which Beijing perceived as provocative.

The exercise showcased China’s growing military capabilities, including its ability to conduct complex joint operations. Analysts believe the PLA, along with the Chinese Coast Guard, now possesses the resources to potentially impose an air and naval blockade around Taiwan.

Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory, condemned the maneuvers as a threat to regional stability and the status quo. The US and Australia also voiced their disapproval, describing the operation as “irresponsible,” “disproportionate,” and “destabilizing.”

While experts agree that the exercise was intended to send a message, they downplay the possibility of an imminent invasion. The current economic and political climate within China is considered unfavorable for such a move.

Despite the tension, Taiwan remains open to cross-strait dialogue and exchanges, but is determined to protect its democratic system. The exercise serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, where military activity and rhetoric continue to escalate.
