Wed Oct 16 12:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Millions of Pounds of Meat Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination

**Washington, D.C.** – A nationwide recall of ready-to-eat meat products, including chicken and turkey, has been issued due to potential Listeria contamination. The recall, initiated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), affects over 200 different products totaling approximately 10 million pounds of meat produced by BrucePac, a pre-cooked meat producer.

The recalled products were distributed to major retailers nationwide, including Aldi, Trader Joe’s, HEB, and Walmart, as well as restaurants and other institutions. The products were manufactured between June 19, 2024, and October 8, 2024.

The FSIS discovered Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeria infections, in ready-to-eat poultry products during routine testing. Further investigation traced the source of the bacteria to BrucePac’s ready-to-eat chicken.

While no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, the FSIS is concerned that some products may still be available for consumption in restaurants, institutions, and homes. Consumers are advised to immediately discard or return any products included in the recall.

The recall includes a wide variety of ready-made salad, rice, and pasta bowls, as well as other products containing chicken or turkey, often bearing well-known brand names.

Listeria infection can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, usually appearing within 24 hours of consuming contaminated food. While most infections are mild and resolve within three days, invasive listeria infections can be life-threatening, particularly for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Consumers can find a complete list of recalled products and photos of the product labels on the USDA website. If you suspect you have consumed contaminated food and are experiencing symptoms of listeria infection, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
