Tue Oct 15 23:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Liquor License Winners Face Threats from Politicians and Syndicates
**Amaravati:** Following the lottery system for liquor shop allotments, several winners are facing pressure from influential politicians and liquor syndicates in various constituencies across Andhra Pradesh.
Reportedly, some leaders and their associates are threatening new licensees, demanding a 20% stake in their businesses. “If you want to operate in our constituency, give us a 20% share without any investment. Otherwise, we’ll see how you do business here,” threatened some leaders. Others are trying to strike deals, offering “some goodwill” in exchange for the licenses.
The situation is particularly acute in Palnadu, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, Anantapur, Vijayawada, Guntur, Sri Satya Sai, and YSR districts.
In some areas, syndicates are demanding a monthly fixed sum along with a percentage share from each shop. They are threatening to prevent the opening of shops if their demands are not met.
This year, several individuals secured licenses through the lottery system, breaking away from the grip of liquor syndicates. These individuals have become targets of the syndicates, who are trying to buy them out, offering “goodwill payments” in exchange for the licenses. In Vijayawada, offers of Rs. 1 crore per shop were made, while in Guntur, the offer was Rs. 85 lakhs. Some even offered 10% share without any investment if the licenses were surrendered.
Taking the issue seriously, the state government has launched an investigation into the threats. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has instructed the party machinery, intelligence wing, and Excise Department to gather information about the politicians and leaders involved in these threats. He has warned those involved, stating that no such intimidation would be tolerated.
Naidu reiterated the government’s commitment to the decisions regarding liquor and sand mining and emphasized strict action against anyone who attempts to tarnish the government’s image. He has directed officials to ensure that the licensed vendors operate freely and according to regulations.
