Wed Oct 16 10:03:06 UTC 2024: ## India Women Fall Short in Thrilling T20 World Cup Match Against Australia

**Sharjah, UAE:** India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup took a hit after a heartbreaking 9-run loss against defending champions Australia on Sunday. The match, which saw a valiant effort from Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, now hinges on the outcome of Pakistan’s upcoming match against New Zealand.

India, needing a win to solidify their position in the tournament, set out to chase a target of 152 runs. They got off to a promising start with Shafali Verma’s aggressive batting, scoring 20 runs in just 13 balls. However, India’s momentum was halted after Verma’s dismissal, followed by the quick exits of Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues.

Captain Kaur took charge, putting up a strong fight with an unbeaten 54, supported by Deepti Sharma’s 29. However, Sharma’s departure triggered another collapse, and despite Kaur’s valiant efforts, India fell short by 9 runs.

Earlier, India’s bowlers had bowled impressively to restrict Australia to 151 runs for 8 wickets. Renuka Singh Thakur took two early wickets, including Beth Mooney and Georgia Wareham, giving India an early advantage. But Grace Harris (40), Tahlia McGrath (32), and Ellyse Perry (32*) ensured Australia reached a respectable total.

India now faces a nervous wait as they rely on Pakistan to defeat New Zealand with a significant margin in their final group match. Even a narrow victory for New Zealand will see them qualify for the semi-finals. The pressure is now firmly on Pakistan to deliver a knockout performance if India’s World Cup dream is to continue.
