Tue Oct 15 14:42:31 UTC 2024: ## Internet Archive Partially Resumes After Major Data Breach
The Internet Archive, home to the Wayback Machine, has partially resumed services following a major data breach last week. While the Wayback Machine is currently accessible in a read-only mode, users cannot capture or save new pages.
The breach, which exposed personal data of 31 million users, was confirmed as a denial of service (DDoS) attack. Hacktivist group SN_BLACKMETA, known for its support of the Palestinian cause, claimed responsibility.
Founder Brewster Kahle announced the partial restoration via Twitter, stating that the archive has made 916 billion web pages accessible. However, further maintenance may lead to temporary suspensions.
Other Internet Archive services, including email and data crawlers for national libraries, remain suspended while security improvements are ongoing.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of even major digital platforms to cyberattacks. The Internet Archive is working to fully restore services and strengthen its security measures to prevent future breaches.
