Tue Oct 15 12:01:59 UTC 2024: ## Travel Industry Booms Despite Recession Fears: Skift Index Shows 9% Growth
**New York, NY – October 7, 2024** – The global travel industry continues to experience strong growth, with the Asia Pacific and North America leading the charge, according to the latest Skift Travel Health Index for August 2024. The index recorded a 9% increase from a year ago, driven by a combination of pent-up demand and booming domestic travel.
The Asia Pacific region saw a particularly impressive 13% growth, fueled by a delayed reopening after the pandemic. Thailand and China are experiencing strong domestic demand, while Japan is seeing a surge in travel due to pent-up demand. Even Hong Kong, which has faced challenges in its luxury sector, has seen growth above 2023 levels, shifting its focus to mid-range and budget-conscious travelers.
In North America, passenger volumes are at an all-time high, with the Transportation Security Administration reporting an average year-on-year growth rate of around 6% each month.
Despite this positive trend, concerns about a potential recession are emerging. While travel is expected to remain resilient due to its increased importance in people’s lives, there are signs that high-income travelers may be reducing spending on ancillary services, such as spa treatments and dining.
“While travel may not be entirely ‘recession-proof,’ it is likely to be ‘recession-resilient’,” said Skift analysts.
