Tue Oct 15 11:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Tensions Escalate as North Korea Threatens to Open Fire on Drones
**Paju, South Korea** – North Korea has issued a dire warning to South Korea, threatening to open fire on any drones detected crossing into its airspace. This follows accusations from Pyongyang that South Korean-launched drones have been dropping propaganda leaflets over the capital, Pyongyang, provoking heightened tensions between the two Koreas.
The North Korean Ministry of National Defence declared on Sunday that any further drone flights would be considered “an act of war.” This came after several drones allegedly flew over the capital in October, dropping propaganda leaflets containing “incendiary rumors and nonsense,” as Pyongyang described it.
While South Korean Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun denied any involvement, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated that they “cannot confirm” the validity of North Korea’s claims. Speculation points towards South Korean activist groups who have historically engaged in sending propaganda and currency to North Korea, often via balloons.
Following the threats, the North Korean military deployed eight artillery brigades, ordering them to “be fully prepared to fire” and strengthened their air observation posts in Pyongyang. In response, South Korean military spokesperson Lee Seong-joon asserted that his country is “fully prepared to respond to provocations” from the North, labeling their accusations as “shameless.”
Furthermore, North Korea announced plans to “completely separate” its territory from South Korea by sealing the border, potentially through detonations on roads connecting the two countries. These explosions could occur as early as Monday, according to the JCS.
The escalating tensions have sparked international concern, with Russia accusing Seoul of a “thoughtless provocation campaign” and fueling “escalation of tensions.” The UN Command in Korea, which oversees the armistice agreement between the two Koreas, stated it is investigating the matter.
This recent escalation echoes a pattern of tension between the two Koreas, marked by a series of provocations and escalations. Experts suggest that North Korea’s actions could be a ploy to rally its citizens against perceived external threats, creating an atmosphere of fear and anxiety within its society.
Despite these developments, the two Koreas remain technically at war since the armistice agreement in 1953 that concluded the Korean War, leaving the peninsula in a state of heightened political and military tension.
