Tue Oct 15 01:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Majorca’s Hospitality Sector Suffers Setback as Tourists Spend Less

**Palma de Mallorca, Spain** – Majorca’s vibrant hospitality sector is facing a downturn, with restaurants reporting a 20% decrease in turnover and bars and nightclubs also experiencing a significant drop in business. While the island welcomed a 4.7% increase in tourists in the first eight months of 2024, industry leaders point to a decline in consumer spending as the primary factor for the slump.

Local restaurants have seen their profits shrink since June, with the situation worsening in recent months. The island’s nightlife scene is also feeling the pinch, with the ABONE association reporting a 15% decline in turnover for 2024 compared to 2023. Miguel Perez-Marsa, president of ABONE and CEO of the Cursach Group, highlights the closure of popular nightclub BCM in Magalluf as a stark example of the downturn’s impact.

“The truth is that the season has not met expectations,” said Perez-Marsa. “The post-pandemic champagne effect, with many people travelling and with a desire to spend, has ended. We have not had the activity that we had in 2022 and 2023.”

Industry experts attribute the decreased spending to rising travel and accommodation costs, which are putting a strain on tourists’ budgets. While overall tourist numbers are up, it seems that visitors are choosing to spend less on entertainment and dining.

The situation highlights the vulnerability of the tourism-dependent economy of Majorca and raises concerns about the long-term impact on the island’s hospitality sector. As the season winds down, businesses are bracing themselves for a challenging winter, hoping for a rebound in the coming year.
