**Boca Chica, Texas** – In a landmark achievement for reusable spaceflight, SpaceX successfully landed the Super Heavy booster of its Starship spacecraft after a test launch yesterday. This marks the first successful landing of a Super Heavy booster on its dedicated “Mechazilla” launch tower, bringing SpaceX one step closer to its ambitious goal of fully reusable space travel.
The 70-meter-tall Super Heavy, powered by 33 engines, detached from the Starship after launch and used 13 of its engines to make a controlled descent. It then shut down all but three engines, maneuvering itself onto two metal arms on its launch tower, dubbed “chopsticks” by SpaceX, in a process taking just seven minutes.
Meanwhile, the Starship spacecraft continued its flight for about an hour, powered by its six engines, before splashing down in the Indian Ocean.
This successful landing represents a significant milestone in Starship development, following a series of increasingly complex test flights since 2019. While the Starship and Super Heavy have previously practiced re-entry and ocean landings, this is the first time Super Heavy has successfully returned to its launch tower.
“Landing rockets after flight is a feat that SpaceX has already managed with Falcon 9,” explained a SpaceX spokesperson. “However, Starship is much more powerful and complex, making this landing a significant challenge.”
The aim of using Super Heavy and the Mechazilla tower is to avoid building new rockets for each launch, dramatically reducing the cost and increasing the frequency of launches. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk envisions a future where the Super Heavy can return to the launchpad within minutes and be ready for a new mission within 30 minutes of landing.
The next challenge for SpaceX is to successfully refuel a Starship in orbit, a crucial step for reaching the Moon.
