**Boca Chica, Texas** – In a groundbreaking feat of engineering, SpaceX successfully captured the massive booster stage of its Starship rocket on Sunday, using robotic arms to catch it as it descended back to the company’s launchpad in southern Texas. This unprecedented achievement, hailed by astronauts and space experts as a significant step forward in human capability, topped off a successful fifth test flight for the uncrewed Starship.

The 71-meter (233ft) Super Heavy booster separated from the upper stage 40 miles (65km) above Earth, allowing the upper stage to continue its journey to an altitude of nearly 90 miles. After looping around the planet at 17,000 mph, the upper stage, as planned, splashed down in the Indian Ocean.

The highlight of the flight, however, was the successful capture of the booster. As it fell back to Earth, three Raptor engines reignited, slowing its descent and steering it towards the “mechazilla” launch tower. The “chopsticks” – the robotic arms – swiftly secured the booster, marking the first successful attempt at this bold maneuver.

SpaceX aims to develop fully reusable rockets, a critical element in their plan to transport humans, scientific equipment, and supplies to the moon and ultimately Mars. This successful booster capture brings them significantly closer to this goal.

The upper stage, however, did not fare as well. While onboard cameras showed a smooth re-entry with heat-shielding tiles performing well, the ship appeared to have suffered a malfunction upon landing. A separate camera feed confirmed a subsequent explosion in the Indian Ocean, though it remains unclear whether this was a controlled detonation or a fuel leak.

Despite the explosion, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk declared the landing “precisely on target!” and the overall mission a success.

The historic booster capture has ignited excitement within the space community, with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield praising the achievement as a “huge step forward in human capability” and expressing anticipation for the future of space exploration. SpaceX’s next steps will focus on addressing the upper stage issues and further refining the booster capture technology, as they continue their ambitious journey to the stars.
