Tue Oct 15 03:55:45 UTC 2024: ## US Sends Advanced Missile Defence System to Israel Amidst Rising Iranian Threats

**JERUSALEM** – In a move to bolster Israel’s defenses against escalating Iranian aggression, the United States has announced it will be sending a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery, one of its most advanced air defense systems, to the country.

The decision comes just hours after Iran warned Washington to keep its forces out of Israel, and follows a series of ballistic missile attacks launched by Iran against Israel in April and October. The recent attack in October, which saw Iran fire over 180 missiles, was one of the largest ballistic missile strikes in history and put significant strain on Israel’s existing air defense systems.

The THAAD system, known for its ability to intercept ballistic missiles in mid-course, will be deployed alongside approximately 100 US troops who will operate the system. This marks the first deployment of American forces to Israel since the recent war in Gaza began in October 2023.

“The battery will help bolster Israel’s air defenses in the wake of Iran’s unprecedented attacks,” said Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder.

While Israel already boasts a sophisticated array of air defense systems, including the Iron Dome and Patriot systems, experts argue that the THAAD will provide an additional layer of protection and enhance Israel’s ability to counter future threats from Iran.

“It makes sense for the US to give Israel extra capabilities,” said Malcolm Davis, senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI). “There’s a recognition that this war is going to continue, and it’s probably going to escalate.”

However, the deployment of the THAAD system has not been met without concern. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that the US was putting its troops at risk by deploying them to Israel.

“While we have made tremendous efforts in recent days to contain an all-out war in our region, I say it clearly that we have no red lines in defending our people and interests,” Araghchi said on X.

The deployment of US forces to Israel comes amidst ongoing conflict in the region, with Israel facing escalating attacks from both Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon. While Israel’s air defenses are considered among the most effective in the world, recent events have highlighted potential vulnerabilities.

The recent deployment of the THAAD system is seen as a clear demonstration of the US’ commitment to Israel’s security in the face of growing threats.
