Mon Oct 14 23:24:48 UTC 2024: ## Van Dijk Sees Red as Netherlands Draw in Hungary

Virgil van Dijk was shown the first red card of his international career as the Netherlands salvaged a 1-1 draw against Hungary in the Nations League on Tuesday.

The hosts took the lead in the first half through a volley from Roland Sallai. However, the Dutch defender was dismissed after picking up two yellow cards within three minutes. His first booking came for dissent, and the second followed for a foul on Kevin Csoboth.

Despite playing with 10 men, the Netherlands equalized shortly after Van Dijk’s departure. Denzel Dumfries headed in from a Cody Gakpo free-kick, ensuring the Dutch left Budapest with a point.

Van Dijk’s red card was his first for the Netherlands in 77 appearances. The incident also saw him miss the Netherlands’ match against Germany on Monday.

The Dutch captain had dominated the game before his dismissal, completing 145 of his 152 passes – more than the entire Hungarian team combined.

The draw leaves the Netherlands with four points in Group A3, while Hungary sits second with five points.
