**Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu:** Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, passed away on July 27, 2015, at the age of 83. The renowned aerospace scientist and statesman, often hailed as the “Missile Man of India” and the “People’s President,” left a lasting legacy on India’s scientific and political landscape.

Born into a humble Muslim family in 1931, Kalam excelled academically despite facing financial hardship. He graduated with a degree in Physics from Saint Joseph’s College and later earned an aeronautical engineering degree from the Madras Institute of Technology.

Kalam’s professional journey began at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where he worked on hovercraft designs. His rise to prominence came in 1969 when he became the project director for SLV-III at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Under his leadership, the team successfully launched the Rohini satellite in 1980, marking a significant milestone in India’s space program.

In the late 1980s, Kalam shifted his focus to missile design, spearheading the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). He played a pivotal role in developing key missiles like AGNI and PRITHVI, bolstering India’s defense capabilities. His contributions in science earned him the position of Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister from 1992 to 1999. He was instrumental in India’s nuclear program, notably during the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests.

In 2002, Kalam was elected President of India, garnering widespread political support from both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress Party. During his presidency, he envisioned India becoming a developed nation by 2020 through initiatives like “Technology Vision 2020,” aiming to advance technology in every sector.

After completing his presidential term in 2007, Kalam continued to engage with the youth through lectures and writing. His autobiography, “Wings of Fire,” resonated with countless Indians.
