Tue Oct 15 05:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Liver Cancer: Understanding the Disease and Treatment Options
**Mumbai, India** – Liver cancer, a serious health concern, affects millions globally. The most prevalent type, hepatocellular carcinoma, originates from liver cells. Other, less common forms include intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma.
The disease develops when DNA mutations occur in liver cells, causing uncontrolled growth and ultimately forming a tumor. While chronic hepatitis infection can be a contributing factor, liver cancer can also affect individuals without any pre-existing conditions.
Early stages of liver cancer often exhibit no noticeable symptoms, but some patients may experience loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal swelling, weakness, fatigue, jaundice, pale stools, dark urine, and nausea.
If a doctor suspects liver cancer, they may recommend blood tests, liver function tests, and checks for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a marker that can indicate liver cancer when elevated. Imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and biopsies are also used for diagnosis.
Treatment options have expanded in recent years, with surgery still considered a primary approach for smaller tumors. New medications like immunotherapy offer promising results, and other treatment options include liver transplant, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy.
