**Chennai, October 14, 2024:** Schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu have been ordered to remain closed today due to heavy rain predictions. The Chief Minister, MK Stalin, has also requested information technology (IT) companies in these districts to allow their employees to work from home until October 18.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from October 14-16, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days. The IMD stated that a low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Monday morning, which is expected to intensify and move towards the northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts.
Chief Minister Stalin convened a meeting to review monsoon preparedness on Monday. The Chennai Corporation Commissioner assured that 990 pumps, 57 tractors with pump sets, 36 motorboats, and various essential supplies are ready for immediate deployment.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected the Narayanapuram lake banks and Ambedkar road canals on Monday to assess the preparedness for heavy rains. He stated on X that they are conducting a survey on the banks of Narayanapuram Lake between Pallikaranai and Kovilambakkam as per Chief Minister Stalin’s instructions.
The heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming days, and authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions.
