Hyderabad – The Telangana police have faced widespread criticism for preventing family members and activists from placing the mortal remains of Professor GN Saibaba at the Telangana Martyrs Memorial in Gun Park, Hyderabad.
Despite arguments with the police, who cited a rule against placing bodies at the memorial, activists kept the hearse van at the site for nearly an hour, seeking to pay tribute to Professor Saibaba’s contribution to the Telangana movement.
“This is a shameless double standard,” tweeted Konatham Dileep, former Telangana digital media director, expressing his anger. “The Telangana police, under the instructions of your party colleague Revanth Reddy, have stopped Professor Saibaba’s body from being placed at the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial in Hyderabad.”
Following the incident, the body was taken to Professor Saibaba’s home in Maula Ali, where family members paid their respects. The body will be donated to the State-run Gandhi Hospital for academic and research purposes.
Professor Saibaba, a renowned civil rights activist, passed away on Saturday due to post-surgery complications. He was acquitted of charges related to alleged Maoist links by the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court in March.
The incident has sparked outrage among activists and civil society leaders, who have condemned the police’s actions and highlighted the importance of honoring Professor Saibaba’s legacy.
