**Seoul, South Korea** – Tensions on the Korean peninsula have surged as North Korea has deployed eight artillery brigades to the border, threatening to blow up roads connecting the two Koreas. This move comes in response to alleged drone flights by South Korea, which Pyongyang claims were used to drop propaganda leaflets.
South Korean military spokesman Lee Sung-jun has assured the public that the military is “fully ready” to respond to any provocation. Lee stated that North Korea is installing screens along border roads, indicating preparations for explosions, which could take place as early as Monday.
While Seoul has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the drone flights, it has accused North Korea of starting the tension by launching “vulgar and base trash balloons” into the South. Previously, the South attributed drone activity to activist groups, who have a history of sending propaganda leaflets and U.S. currency across the border.
North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, has issued a stern warning, with his sister Kim Yo Jong calling the drone flights an “unpardonable, malicious challenge” to their state. She threatened “a horrible disaster” if the flights continue.
This escalating situation marks a significant deterioration in inter-Korean relations. The two Koreas remain technically at war, with the border roads a symbol of past periods of rapprochement, including the historic 2018 summit where the leaders declared an end to war.
The North’s actions, including the reintroduction of heavy weapons and the dismantling of the 2018 military agreement, indicate a return to a more confrontational stance. The international community is watching closely as the situation unfolds, urging both sides to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue to prevent further escalation.
