**Chennai, Tamil Nadu:** A red alert has been issued for Chennai and surrounding districts of Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram on October 16th, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall. The northeast monsoon is expected to arrive between October 15th and 16th, bringing with it significant precipitation.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasts up to 20 cm of rainfall in these districts, prompting authorities to implement various preparedness measures. Orange and yellow alerts have also been issued for other Tamil Nadu districts, indicating varying levels of rainfall.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) to assess monsoon preparedness within Chennai Corporation limits. The ICCC, equipped with flood alerts and water-logging reports, will be operational 24/7, with a dedicated helpline (1913) for public emergencies.

The Tamil Nadu government has taken several proactive steps, including deploying 13,000 volunteers, setting up pumping motors in low-lying areas, and launching a new app called ‘TN ALERT’ for real-time rainfall updates. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is also prepared with 356 pumping stations and various machines for any emergencies.

The public is advised to stay informed about the weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The government has urged residents to contact the ICCC helpline for any assistance or information regarding flood-related situations.
