**New Delhi:** The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) has received an overwhelming response from aspiring interns, with over 1,55,109 candidates registering on the dedicated portal within the first 24 hours of its launch, according to sources in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
The scheme, aimed at providing skill development and enhancing employability for youth aged 21-24, saw a registration count exceeding the initial target of 1.25 lakh candidates for the pilot project. The window for youth registration opened on Saturday, October 7th, and will remain open until October 25th.
The MCA has also extended the deadline for corporates to register and offer internships on the PMIS portal to October 15th, reflecting the strong response from the industry. As of October 11th, 193 companies had already posted 90,849 internship opportunities.
Top corporates like Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries, and HDFC Bank have already pledged internship opportunities across 737 districts in 37 states and union territories. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh are leading in terms of the number of internship opportunities posted.
The scheme offers a monthly allowance of ₹5,000 and a one-time grant of ₹6,000 to selected interns. The MCA is administering the program, with the top 500 corporates based on their CSR spend being invited to participate.
The government has allocated ₹800 crore for the pilot scheme, which aims to provide 1.25 lakh internships to youth in FY’25. The initiative is part of the government’s push towards job creation and skill development among the country’s youth.
The strong response from both youth and corporates underscores the immense potential of the PMIS in addressing the pressing issue of employability and skill development in India.
