Mon Oct 14 09:22:47 UTC 2024: ## Ola Ordered to Provide Direct Refunds to Customers: CCPA Cracks Down on Ride-Hailing Giant
**New Delhi:** In a significant move to protect customer rights, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has directed ride-hailing platform Ola to provide direct refunds to customers through their bank accounts or as per their preferred method during complaint resolution. The CCPA has also instructed Ola to provide bills for all auto rides booked through its platform, aiming to improve transparency in its services.
The CCPA has taken this action following numerous complaints against Ola, with over 2,061 grievances filed on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) this year up to October 9th. These complaints primarily revolved around booking issues and a lack of refunds for customers.
The CCPA has highlighted that Ola currently offers only coupons for refunds, which can only be used for future rides on the platform. This practice has been deemed a violation of customer rights, forcing customers to accept a less favorable refund method. The regulator has now mandated that Ola must provide refunds in the manner requested by the customer, including direct bank transfers.
“This is a landmark decision that strengthens consumer protection and ensures that Ola provides a fair and transparent service to its customers,” said a CCPA official.
In addition to the refund directive, the CCPA has also ordered Ola to provide clear and detailed bills to customers for all auto rides booked through its platform. Previously, the Ola app often refused to provide bills, citing changes in auto service norms, leading to further complaints.
This recent action by the CCPA emphasizes the growing concern regarding the need for better consumer protection in the rapidly growing ride-hailing industry. The regulator’s directive is a clear message to all ride-hailing companies to prioritize customer satisfaction and offer transparent, consumer-friendly services.
