Mon Oct 14 16:10:00 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Threatens to Destroy Inter-Korean Roads, Escalating Tensions
**SEOUL, South Korea (AP)** – North Korea is threatening to destroy parts of inter-Korean roads, escalating tensions with South Korea amid accusations of drone flights.
South Korea’s military observed preparations for the demolitions, including the installation of screens along the roads. Spokesperson Lee Sung Joon said the destruction could happen as early as Monday.
This move comes as North Korea continues to condemn South Korea for alleged drone flights over its territory, calling them “confrontational hysteria” and vowing to respond with force. North Korea’s Defense Ministry said they are prepared to “open fire” and turn South Korean territory “into piles of ashes.”
North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has increasingly portrayed South Korea as an enemy, aiming to cut off all ties and abandon decades-long efforts for unification. His sister, Kim Yo Jong, referred to the South Korean military as “dregs” and “mongrels tamed by Yankees” and placed blame on the US.
The potential road destruction would further isolate North Korea and cement its adversarial stance toward the South. It also comes after North Korea has been reinforcing its border with anti-tank barriers and mines.
While North Korea has threatened forceful responses, experts say a full-scale attack is unlikely due to the combined strength of the US and South Korean militaries. South Korean officials believe North Korea’s actions are aimed at solidifying internal unity and stoking instability in South Korea.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high as North Korea continues its provocative missile tests, and South Korea and the US strengthen their military drills. Some observers speculate that North Korea could aim for major weapons tests ahead of the US presidential election, aiming for greater leverage in future diplomatic discussions with the US.
This latest development highlights the deepening division between the two Koreas and underscores the precariousness of the regional security landscape.
