Mon Oct 14 02:05:17 UTC 2024: ## Sinner Shocks Djokovic to Win Shanghai Masters, Claims Seventh Title of the Year

SHANGHAI – Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked Italian, stunned Novak Djokovic in straight sets to clinch the Shanghai Masters title on Sunday, marking his seventh championship of the season, a tour-leading number.

Sinner dominated the 24-time Grand Slam champion, winning 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a thrilling match that lasted just over an hour and a half. Djokovic, aiming for his 100th career title and a fifth in Shanghai, was never able to break Sinner’s serve. The Italian showcased impressive form, hitting eight aces and 22 winners, compared to Djokovic’s four and 12, respectively.

“It was a very tough match, obviously, playing against Novak is one of the toughest challenges we have,” Sinner said, acknowledging the magnitude of his victory. “He doesn’t have any weaknesses. You have to try and use the small chances that he gives you, but there are not many during the match.”

Sinner’s impressive victory comes after a narrow loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the China Open final and amid an ongoing doping case. He now holds a 4-4 record against Djokovic, a testament to his growing prowess.

Djokovic, playing in China for the first time in five years, acknowledged Sinner’s dominance. “I think I played some really good tennis, but congratulations to Jannik,” he said. “He was just too good today. Too strong, too fast, well done. You’re having an incredible year. You deserve this.”

The Shanghai Masters wasn’t the only major tennis victory of the weekend. Aryna Sabalenka, ranked second in the world, secured her third consecutive Wuhan Open title with a dominant 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 win over Zheng Qinwen. This victory marks Sabalenka’s fourth title of the season, following her Australian and U.S. Open triumphs. With this win, Sabalenka extends her Wuhan Open record to a perfect 17-0.
