Mon Oct 14 01:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Tamil Nadu Braces for Northeast Monsoon, Heavy Rains Expected
**Chennai, October 12:** As Tamil Nadu eagerly awaits the arrival of the northeast monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state from October 14-16.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over the southern Tamil Nadu coast, coupled with another over the central Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring scattered to widespread rainfall across the state over the next five days. The most intense downpours are anticipated on October 14-15.
The impending rains come as several districts have already been affected by flash floods this week, causing road blockages, widespread power outages, and leaving residents stranded.
The northeast monsoon, which typically brings around 48% of Tamil Nadu’s annual rainfall, is crucial for agriculture, drinking water, and irrigation. The rains are especially vital for crops like paddy, sugarcane, and pulses, ensuring a good yield. They also replenish reservoirs, lakes, and groundwater, ensuring water security across the state.
While the rains are essential, the potential for flash floods and urban flooding during this period requires local authorities to prioritize flood risk management.
The official onset of the northeast monsoon will be declared based on four primary criteria: the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, the presence of persistent surface easterlies along the Tamil Nadu coast, the depth of these easterlies reaching 850 hPa over the same region, and widespread rainfall across coastal Tamil Nadu, southern coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighboring areas.
