Mon Oct 14 07:05:00 UTC 2024: ## Columbus’s Jewish Ancestry Revealed in New DNA Study
**Madrid, Spain** – A groundbreaking genetic study conducted by Spanish scientists has revealed that Christopher Columbus, the explorer who famously discovered the Americas, may have been of Spanish and Jewish descent. This research, spanning over 20 years, challenges the long-held belief that Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, and points towards a Spanish origin, possibly in Valencia.
The study, led by forensic medicine professor José Antonio Lorente of Granada University, analyzed DNA samples from the remains of Columbus, his son Hernando, and his brother Diego. Comparing this genetic data with that of historical figures and known relatives, scientists discovered markers indicating a Jewish lineage.
This finding suggests that Columbus, a Sephardic Jew, may have concealed his Jewish identity to avoid persecution in Spain. In 1492, the same year Columbus landed in the Americas, Spain expelled its Jewish population, forcing them to convert to Catholicism or leave the country.
Professor Lorente, in the documentary “Columbus DNA: His True Origin,” described the results as “almost absolutely reliable.” He highlighted the presence of “traits compatible with Jewish origin” in both the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA of Hernando.
This discovery adds a significant layer to the complex legacy of Christopher Columbus. While his voyages sparked a new era of exploration and ushered in European colonization of the Americas, they also resulted in the tragic deaths of millions of indigenous people.
The findings are expected to spark further debate and research into Columbus’s life and motivations, and provide a deeper understanding of his personal history and the impact of his voyages on global history.
