Hyderabad, October 13: Dr. G.N. Saibaba, a prominent human rights activist, professor, and writer, passed away on Saturday evening at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad. He was 58. Saibaba’s death comes after a decade of imprisonment under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), a period that saw him subjected to deteriorating health and alleged neglect by prison authorities.
Dr. Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound professor of English Literature at Delhi University, was arrested in 2014 along with five others for alleged association with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). The evidence against him was widely considered flimsy, with the prosecution relying on seemingly trivial items like bananas, umbrellas, and newspapers to link him to Naxal activity.
Despite multiple acquittals by lower courts, the state consistently appealed to the Supreme Court to ensure his continued imprisonment. Saibaba was released in March 2024, but his health had suffered irreparable damage due to the years of confinement, poor medical care, and alleged torture.
Dr. Saibaba was not just a scholar but a tireless advocate for social justice, particularly for the rights of Adivasis and marginalized communities. He dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of the downtrodden, participating in numerous movements, and challenging the government’s Operation Green Hunt, a brutal paramilitary offensive targeting Adivasis in the so-called “Red Corridor.”
His unwavering commitment to social justice and his outspoken critique of the state’s actions earned him the ire of authorities, ultimately leading to his unjust imprisonment.
Dr. Saibaba’s death is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the UAPA on individuals, particularly those who dare to challenge the status quo. His story highlights the alarming trend of political prisoners being subjected to physical and psychological torture, with their basic human rights routinely disregarded.
The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the academic and activist communities, leaving a void in the fight for justice and equality. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire generations to come, reminding them of the importance of unwavering commitment to social justice and the need to resist authoritarianism in all its forms.
