**Beijing, October 14, 2024** – Wu Bangguo, a prominent Chinese leader and former Vice Premier and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), passed away on October 12th. His body will be cremated in Beijing today.
Wu Bangguo served as a member of the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Central Committee from the 14th to the 17th sessions, holding positions including Vice Premier, member of the Politburo Standing Committee, and Secretary of the Secretariat. He is described as a “long-tested and loyal communist fighter, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary and statesman, and an outstanding leader of the Party and the State.”
To commemorate his life and legacy, flags will be flown at half-mast today at various locations across China, including Tiananmen Square, the Great Hall of the People, and provincial and municipal government headquarters. The Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions, border crossings, international ports, and Chinese embassies abroad will also participate in the mourning.
