**New Delhi:** In a major escalation of the diplomatic rift, India has recalled its High Commissioner and diplomatic staff from Canada, citing concerns over their safety. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement saying that the Trudeau Government’s actions in an atmosphere of extremism and violence have jeopardized the safety of Indian diplomats.
“We have no faith in the current Canadian Government’s commitment to ensure their security,” the MEA stated, adding that India has decided to withdraw its diplomatic personnel.
The move comes after Canada’s investigation into the death of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which implicated the Indian High Commissioner, Sanjay Verma. India strongly condemned the inclusion of its envoy in the probe, stating that it is unacceptable.
Earlier today, the Indian Foreign Ministry summoned the Canadian representative, Stuart Wheeler, to express its dissatisfaction with the developments.
The MEA has reiterated that it will never accept any targeting of its High Commissioner and diplomats. This decision marks a significant escalation in the diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
