**Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh:** Tensions are running high in Bahraich after a young man, Ram Gopal Mishra, was killed in a shooting that followed Durga Visarjan festivities. The incident sparked violent protests, leading to arson, vandalism, and clashes with police.
The deceased’s family refused to perform his last rites, demanding swift action against the perpetrators. Hundreds of people took to the streets, blocking roads and chanting slogans against the police administration. The mob set fire to a local hospital and a Hero Honda showroom in a fit of rage.
The situation escalated further when the police arrived to bring Mishra’s body back to the village after the post-mortem. The villagers, armed with sticks and rods, attacked the police and clashed with them. The mob also blocked the roads by placing Mishra’s body in the middle.
Villagers accused the police of negligence and inaction against the other party, while their own were being beaten. The police used mild force to control the mob and called for additional security forces.
To ease the tension, internet services have been suspended in the area.
The Bahraich police have filed an FIR against 10 individuals, including six named accused: Abdul Hamid, Sarfraz, Fahim, Share Khan, Nankaau, and Marfa Ali, in connection with the violence. Over 30 people have been detained so far, and the search for the remaining accused is underway.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the situation and has held a meeting with senior officials to assess the situation and order strict action against the accused. Sources indicate that senior officers from Lucknow could be sent to Bahraich if the need arises.
The incident has also drawn political reactions. The UP Congress President Ajay Rai launched a scathing attack on the Yogi government, accusing them of creating a ‘jungle raj’ in the state. He demanded the Chief Minister’s resignation and claimed that the state is witnessing constant violence against minorities and the upper castes.
