Sun Oct 13 12:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk Detained in Delhi During Protest for Ladakh’s Rights
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and 20 of his supporters were detained by Delhi Police on Sunday while protesting outside the Ladakh Bhawan in the city. The group, who had marched from Leh to Delhi, are demanding Ladakh’s inclusion in the sixth schedule of the Constitution, which would grant the region greater autonomy and protection for its tribal communities.
The protesters, who were on a fast, were detained and taken to the Mandir Marg police station. Police said they lacked permission to protest at the location and that their application to protest at Jantar Mantar is currently under consideration.
Wangchuk and his supporters had been detained earlier at Delhi’s Singhu border on September 30 before being released on the night of October 2. They are seeking a meeting with top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss their demands.
In addition to inclusion in the sixth schedule, the group is also demanding statehood for Ladakh, a public service commission for the region, and separate Lok Sabha seats for the Leh and Kargil districts.
