Sat Oct 12 19:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Tigers’ Vierling Makes Game-Saving Catch in ALDS Win
**DETROIT** – Matt Vierling’s quick reflexes and perfect positioning made the difference in the Detroit Tigers’ 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday. With two runners on and the potential game-tying run at bat, Vierling, playing near the back of the infield, snagged a line drive off the bat of David Fry for the game-ending out.
“I was just trying to be ready for the ball,” said Vierling. “I know he likes to pull the ball, so I was just ready for anything that came my way.”
The play was a testament to the Tigers’ meticulous defensive strategy, which manager A.J. Hinch said involves hours of research and analysis. “We factor in the pitcher, the type of pitch, and the hitter’s tendencies,” said Hinch. “But you also need instincts, and those two things came together in this play.”
For pitcher Beau Brieske, the play encapsulated the Tigers’ unexpected playoff run. “It sums up the way we’ve been playing all season,” said Brieske. “Guys are stepping up and making the plays when we need them.”
The Tigers now lead the series 2-1, and will look to clinch their first ALCS berth since 2012 in Game 4 on Thursday.
