**Detroit, MI** – Former Detroit Lions quarterback and Hall of Famer Gregory “Greg” Paul Landry passed away peacefully on October 4th, 2024, at the age of 77. Landry, a beloved figure in both Detroit and his hometown of Nashua, New Hampshire, is being remembered for his exceptional athletic career, his unwavering dedication to family, and his quiet generosity.
Landry, who was born on December 18th, 1946, was a standout athlete at the University of Massachusetts, excelling in both football and baseball. He led the UMass football team in passing for three seasons and earned a place in the UMass Hall of Fame in 1980. It was at UMass that he met his wife, Jeannine, also a Hall of Famer for her achievements in gymnastics. The couple were married for 47 years.
Selected by the Detroit Lions with the 11th pick in the 1968 NFL Draft, Landry went on to have an impressive 11-season career. He is remembered for his football intelligence, his ability to call his own plays, and his famous 76-yard quarterback sneak. After his NFL career, he served as a coach for several teams, including his beloved Lions.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Landry was known for his unwavering love and devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine, their five children, 18 grandchildren, and his brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in honor of Landry’s grandson, Jackson, to the Autism Alliance of Michigan.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 15th, and Wednesday, October 16th, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home in Troy, Michigan. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 17th, at 10:00 AM at St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
