Sharjah, UAE: India Women will face a crucial challenge in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they go up against Australia Women in their 18th match of the tournament.
A win against the defending champions is vital for India to secure their place in the semifinals. The Indian team suffered a loss in their opening match against New Zealand, but bounced back with wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They currently sit at second in the points table with 4 points, just ahead of New Zealand who are on the same points but have a lower net run rate.
The match was made even more intense as Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. The Kangaroos posted a total of 151 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, setting a target of 152 for India.
Australia’s innings started poorly, with the opening two wickets falling in the same over. Renuka Singh Thakur struck first, dismissing Beth Mooney for 2 runs, followed by a clean bowled dismissal of Georgia Wareham for a duck.
Captain Tahlia McGrath provided some resistance with a knock of 32 runs, while Grace Harris scored 40 runs before being dismissed by Deepti Sharma.
The Indian bowlers did a commendable job, with Renuka Singh Thakur and Deepti Sharma taking two wickets each. Shreyanka Patil, Pooja Vastrakar, and Deepti Sharma all picked up a wicket apiece.
India will need to bat well and chase down the target if they are to secure victory and progress to the semi-finals. The match is a must-win for the Indian women’s team as they will be hoping to make it to the last four of the tournament.
