Fri Oct 11 18:55:57 UTC 2024: ## Northern Lights Dazzle Skies Across the Globe

A powerful solar storm unleashed a spectacular display of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, across vast swathes of Europe and the United States on Thursday night. This rare and fleeting phenomenon captivated seasoned aurora chasers and novice stargazers alike.

The dazzling show of red, green, and purple hues shimmering in the night sky was caused by a geomagnetic storm that slammed into Earth. While typically viewed only in regions near the Arctic Circle, like Alaska and Iceland, this storm brought the auroras to much lower latitudes, with sightings reported as far south as Texas, Arizona, and even Australia.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted visibility as far south as Alabama and northern California, but the storm surpassed expectations, delighting sky-watchers across the globe.

This is the second severe solar storm to hit Earth this year, the first occurring in May. While the Thursday night show has subsided, experts predict the auroras may reappear over the weekend, giving those who missed the dazzling display another chance to catch a glimpse.

From the shores of Whitby Harbour in the UK to the pumpjacks of Alberta, Canada, and the observatories of Spain, the northern lights painted the night sky with vibrant colors, evoking a sense of awe and wonder across the world.
