**Chennai, India (October 12, 2024):** A speeding express train collided with a stationary goods train near Gummidipoondi in the Chennai Division of Southern Railway on Friday night, resulting in the derailment of at least 13 coaches. While no fatalities have been reported, several passengers sustained injuries and have been transported to nearby hospitals.

The accident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. when the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express (Train No. 12578), traveling at 75 kmph, veered off the main line and collided with the rear of a goods train parked on the loop line. The impact caused a parcel van to catch fire and resulted in the derailment of multiple coaches.

According to railway sources, the express train received a green signal to proceed through the main line, but the train crew experienced a sudden jerk and entered the loop line instead. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.

Southern Railway officials, along with doctors, ambulances, and rescue teams, have reached the accident site. Train movement on both sides of the affected section has been disrupted, and alternative arrangements are being made to transport passengers.

The accident has caused disruptions to several other train routes, including the SMVT Bengaluru – Kamakhya AC Express, SMVT Bengaluru – Danapur Sanghamitra Express, and SMVT Bengaluru – Guwahati Express. The Southern Railway has announced helpline numbers (044-25354151/044-24354995) for passengers seeking information.
