Fri Oct 11 18:58:17 UTC 2024: ## South Korean Author Han Kang Wins Nobel Prize in Literature, Igniting Nationwide Celebration

**Seoul, South Korea** – Renowned South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, sparking widespread joy and celebration across the country. Her win marks the first time a South Korean writer has received this coveted prize.

News of Han’s victory triggered a surge in demand for her books, with queues spilling out of bookstores and online retailers crashing under the weight of traffic. Kyobo Book Centre, South Korea’s largest bookstore chain, reported a significant spike in sales of Han’s works, with stocks quickly selling out.

Politicians, authors, and readers alike showered Han with praise. President Yoon Suk Yeol congratulated her on Facebook, while parliamentary proceedings were temporarily paused as officials celebrated the news.

“I was very surprised when I was first told the news of the award,” said Han. “Thank you very much for selecting me as the winner. The huge waves of warm congratulations that were delivered to me throughout the day were also surprising. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Han’s work often explores themes of historical trauma and marginalized voices. Her 2007 novel, “The Vegetarian,” which was translated into English in 2015, garnered international acclaim and won the International Booker Prize. Her 2014 novel, “Human Acts,” delves into the 1980 Gwangju uprising, while her upcoming novel, “We Do Not Part,” focuses on the 1948-49 Jeju uprising.

“Han Kang is a brilliant novelist who reflects our modern condition with courage, imagination, and intelligence,” remarked Min Jin Lee, the Korean-American author of “Pachinko.”

South Korean author Jeon Heyjin highlighted Han’s dedication to addressing marginalized communities in her writing. “As soon as I heard the news of Han Kang’s Nobel prize win, I thought of her dedication to writing novels that address marginalised and discriminated groups,” said Jeon.

Despite the outpouring of congratulations, Han’s father expressed concern that she might prefer to avoid the spotlight. “She said given the fierce Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine wars and people dying every day, how could she celebrate and hold a joyous press conference?” he shared.

Han’s win is seen as a significant moment for Korean literature and a testament to her powerful and impactful storytelling. Her work has resonated with readers worldwide, and the Nobel Prize serves as a global recognition of her literary excellence.
