**Chennai, India** – A collision between a passenger train and a stationary goods train in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district has resulted in injuries to at least 10 passengers. The incident occurred at Kavaraipettai, near Chennai, on Friday evening at around 8:30 p.m., when the 12578 Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with the goods train.
According to initial reports, the express train experienced a sudden jerk while entering Kavaraipettai station. The train, despite receiving a signal to enter the main line, entered the loop line instead at a speed of 75 kmph, colliding with the stationary goods train.
The impact of the collision resulted in the derailment of at least 12 coaches of the passenger train. The parcel van of the express train also caught fire.
The injured passengers were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported so far. Railway officials have confirmed that over 95% of the passengers have been rescued from the affected coaches.
Ambulances, medical teams, and rescue personnel have reached the accident site. Senior railway officials, including the General Manager of Southern Railways and the Divisional Railway Manager of Chennai division, are also on their way to the site.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav is monitoring the situation from the Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. He has instructed railway authorities to provide proper medical care to the injured and ensure the safe passage of the remaining passengers to their destinations. Rescue operations are underway to clear the tracks and restore normal train services.
Several train services, including the Chennai-New Delhi express, have been diverted due to the accident.
