Fri Oct 11 15:11:08 UTC 2024: ## “Vettaiyan” Opens Strong at Box Office, Rajinikanth-Amitabh Bachchan Film Earns ₹25 Crore
**Chennai, October 11:** Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s much-anticipated collaboration, “Vettaiyan,” has made a strong debut at the box office, grossing over ₹25 crore in India on its first day. The film, directed by TJ Gnanavel, released on Thursday and witnessed an impressive opening day occupancy, particularly in the Tamil sector (53.96%).
“Vettaiyan” follows the story of Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan), a school teacher who exposes a drug trade operating near her school. The case is taken up by Kanyakumari SP Athiyan (Rajinikanth), known for his encounter killings, who ultimately delivers ‘justice’ through an encounter with the drug kingpin. However, this is just the beginning of a larger scandal, prompting a deeper investigation.
The film, a blend of action and social commentary, has been receiving mixed reviews. While some appreciate the film’s strong performance, compelling screenplay, and the dynamic on-screen chemistry between the lead actors, others find the mass scenes underwhelming and the social message slightly lacking.
“Vettaiyan” features a star-studded cast including Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, and Ritika Singh. Notably, this is Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s first film together in 33 years, marking Amitabh’s debut in Tamil cinema.
Director TJ Gnanavel attempts to tackle multiple social issues in the film, including the morality of police encounters and the exploitation within the coaching industry. However, some critics believe the film struggles to balance Rajinikanth’s star power with its social discourse.
“Vettaiyan” continues to play in theatres, and its box office performance over the weekend will be crucial in determining its final success.
