Fri Oct 11 12:25:37 UTC 2024: ## Tesla Unveils Cybercab: A Futuristic RoboTaxi With Big Promises, But Big Questions Remain
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, took the stage at Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California, to unveil the highly anticipated Cybercab, the company’s robotaxi. The futuristic vehicle, boasting wing-like doors and a complete absence of pedals or steering wheel, delivered Musk in front of a captivated audience eager to hear about Tesla’s next big move.
Musk, known for his bold predictions, reiterated his belief that fully autonomous vehicles will be safer than human-driven cars and could even earn owners money through ride-sharing. He stated that production of the Cybercab, which will compete with rivals like Waymo, is slated to begin sometime before 2027 and will have a price tag under $30,000.
However, analysts are skeptical about the feasibility of these ambitious plans. “It will be extremely difficult for Tesla to offer a new vehicle at that price within that timescale,” said Paul Miller of Forrester Research. “Without subsidies or Tesla taking a loss on every vehicle, a launch close to that price this decade seems unlikely.”
Musk also announced that Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y cars are expected to feature fully autonomous technology in Texas and California next year, pending regulatory approval. However, concerns about the safety of unsupervised autonomous vehicles remain. “It is a big chunk of metal driving on roads at high speed, so safety concerns are big,” commented Samitha Samaranayake, a Cornell University professor.
Tesla’s approach to self-driving technology relies heavily on cameras instead of more expensive radar and Lidar systems used by competitors. The company plans to train its AI with data collected from millions of vehicles, but some experts question the reliability of this method in ensuring safety.
The Cybercab project has faced delays, originally slated for release in August. Musk attributed the delay to design changes, but the wait has allowed competitors to gain a foothold in the robotaxi market.
Despite these challenges, Tesla’s event was a spectacle of futuristic technology, featuring dancing humanoid robots and a prototype for a Robovan capable of transporting up to 20 passengers. While the event showcased a promising vision for the future of transportation, analysts remain cautious about Tesla’s ability to deliver on its ambitious promises.
The rollout of robotaxis has faced obstacles, including the suspension of Cruise’s driverless cars in San Francisco following a pedestrian accident. However, the sector continues to expand. Waymo recently announced plans to add Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles to its fleet, Uber has partnered with Cruise, and Chinese tech giant Baidu is looking to expand its robotaxi service, Apollo Go, beyond China.
