Thu Oct 10 18:42:05 UTC 2024: ## Muslim Groups Sound Alarm on European Crackdown on Pro-Palestinian Activism

**Warsaw, Poland** – Muslim civil society organizations have sounded the alarm at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Human Dimension Conference in Warsaw, alleging a concerning trend of state suppression against pro-Palestinian activism across Europe.

Speaking at the conference, prominent French Muslim activist Elias d’Imzalene, who faces trial this month for inciting “intifada in Paris” during a pro-Palestine demonstration, accused France of spearheading Islamophobia and discrimination in Europe. He claimed that activists advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza are being persecuted and silenced.

A joint statement released by Muslim groups from the UK, France, Sweden, Austria, and Denmark highlighted an “undeniable increase in the suppression and criminalisation of forms of resistance to Israeli atrocities in Gaza.” They pointed to arrests of activists, restrictions on free speech, and the banning of organizations as evidence of this crackdown.

Shezana Hafiz, outreach coordinator at the UK-based campaign group Cage international, accused the UK government of compromising civil liberties while continuing to support arms exports to Israel. She pointed to the detention of Palestine Action activists, who are protesting companies allegedly supplying weapons to Israel, as examples of political prisoners.

Amanj Aziz, a spokesperson for Swedish Muslim advocacy organization Insan, expressed frustration at the hypocrisy of the conference, where delegates allegedly support genocide in Palestine while censoring and arresting protesters in their own countries.

The Muslim groups criticized global institutions and European countries for failing to hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza. They called on the OSCE to enforce mechanisms compelling governments to adhere to international law, warning that failure to do so will expose the organization’s ineffectiveness.

The OSCE Human Dimension Conference provides a platform for dialogue on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The conference attendees, including representatives from governments, international organizations, and civil society, are tasked with addressing these issues and finding solutions.

This latest development highlights a growing tension between freedom of expression and the perceived threat of pro-Palestinian activism in Europe. It remains to be seen whether the OSCE and other global institutions will take concrete steps to address the concerns raised by Muslim civil society organizations.
