**LOS ANGELES, CA -** Multi-platinum artist Pharrell Williams, known for hits like “Happy” and “Get Lucky,” has revealed the unexpected origin story behind his 2013 smash hit “Happy.” In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Williams shared that the song was born out of a creative rut.

The Grammy-winning musician explained that after completing the soundtrack for “Despicable Me 2,” he found himself struggling for inspiration. “I asked myself, ‘How do you make a song?'” Williams recounted. “And then the inspiration hit.”

This inspiration, however, came in the form of a sarcastic answer to his own question. “It was only until you were out of ideas and you asked yourself a rhetorical question and you came back with a sarcastic answer,” he explained. “How do you make a song about a person that’s so happy that nothing can bring them down? And I sarcastically answered it and put music to it, and that sarcasm became the song.”

“Happy” went on to become a global phenomenon, selling over 13.9 million copies and holding the record for the longest music video at one point.

Williams also discussed his upcoming biographical film, “Piece by Piece,” directed by Morgan Neville. The film uses Lego animation to tell Williams’ story, with his real-life friends and collaborators, including Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, and Justin Timberlake, lending their voices to Lego minifigure versions of themselves.

“Piece by Piece” is set to premiere in theaters on Friday, October 11th.
