**Oslo, Norway** – The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Known as Hibakusha, the organization has been recognized for its tireless efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
The Committee cited the Hibakusha’s powerful witness testimonies, which have played a crucial role in highlighting the devastating human consequences of nuclear war. Their unwavering message – “Nuclear weapons must never be used again” – has resonated globally and served as a driving force behind the international movement for nuclear disarmament.
“This is unbelievable,” said Toshiyuki Mimaki, co-head of Nihon Hidankyo, his voice choked with emotion. “Never did I dream this could happen.”
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the advancement of peace. This year’s award to the Hibakusha is a powerful testament to the importance of their unwavering commitment to peace and the need for a world free from the threat of nuclear annihilation.
