The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a coalition of non-governmental organizations working towards the elimination of nuclear weapons. The committee cited ICAN’s efforts to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for their ground-breaking work in bringing about the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The award acknowledges ICAN’s tireless advocacy for a world free of nuclear weapons, a goal they continue to tirelessly pursue.
