Thu Oct 10 23:44:25 UTC 2024: ## Italy Held to Draw by Belgium in Nations League Thriller
Italy were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Belgium in a dramatic Nations League Group A2 clash at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, the Azzurri were undone by a red card to Lorenzo Pellegrini and a spirited comeback from the Belgians.
Italy started brightly, taking the lead just one minute into the match when Federico Di Marco’s cross found Andrea Cambiaso, who bundled the ball into the net after Koen Casteels saved his initial shot. Mateo Retegui doubled the lead in the 24th minute after Casteels denied Cambiaso again.
However, the match took a dramatic turn just before half-time when Pellegrini was sent off after a VAR review for hitting Arthur Theate. This galvanized Belgium, who pulled a goal back through Maxim de Cuyper just minutes later.
The Belgians continued their momentum into the second half, equalizing through Leandro Trossard in the 61st minute. Despite playing with a man advantage, Belgium were unable to find a winner, leaving Italy to remain top of the group with seven points, one ahead of France.
In other Nations League action, France beat Israel 4-1 with Christopher Nkunku scoring on his return to the team. Meanwhile, Ireland secured a crucial 2-1 win over Finland after a late winner from Robbie Brady. Norway continued their dominance in Group B3 with a 3-0 victory over Slovenia thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland.
Despite the draw, Italy remain in a strong position to qualify for the Nations League quarter-finals. Belgium, however, face a crucial clash with France on Monday, knowing they need a win to keep their hopes alive.
