Fri Oct 11 10:51:16 UTC 2024: ## Japanese Atomic Bomb Survivors’ Group Awarded Nobel Peace Prize for Nuclear Abolition Advocacy

**Oslo, Norway** – Nihon Hidankyo, the Japanese atomic bomb survivors’ group, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for their tireless work towards a world free of nuclear weapons.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized the group’s “efforts to demonstrate through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again,” highlighting the devastating impact of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The committee emphasized the group’s courage in sharing their harrowing experiences to promote peace and advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Tomoyuki Mimaki, co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, expressed his disbelief and joy at the award, stating that it would significantly bolster their efforts to convince the world of the possibility of a nuclear-free future.

The committee, while praising the group’s work in establishing a “nuclear taboo,” warned of the dangers of escalating nuclear threats, particularly with ongoing conflicts and modernizations of nuclear arsenals.

The award comes at a critical time, with heightened tensions and increasing nuclear threats globally. The committee emphasized that nuclear war poses a grave threat to humanity, with the potential to destroy civilization.

The Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel Prize awarded in Oslo, and this year, 286 candidates, including individuals and organizations, were nominated. The prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish krona ($1.1 million) and a medal, which will be presented to the winners on December 10.
